Pentecost 16

Join us at 10 am!

We are St. Paul's United Church in downtown Brampton

an Engaged Community of Faith!

I have been reflecting on the wisdom T. S. Elliot shared as I plan our fifth year of ministry together.  Changes are neither easy nor comfortable for most of us. Changes in church, regardless of what words you use or how you describe them, are often experienced as being slow. One thing we tend to discount is that changes and transitions are part of being church. If the followers of Jesus didn’t make or adapt to changes, the teachings of Jesus would not have spread outside of the Jewish communities in Palestine.

If the four denominations — the Methodist Church Canada, the Congregational Union of Ontario and Quebec, two-thirds of the congregations of the Presbyterian Church in Canada in 1925 and the Canadian Conferences of the Evangelical United Breathren Church in 1968 — didn’t change, we would not be worshipping and ministering in Brampton as part of the United Church.

The “challenge”, as in an opportunity to overcome obstacles to become more effective, for us as a congregation, is to find ways to let go of the expressions of the past that no longer work in our ministry contexts in downtown Brampton in 2018.  The opportunity for us lies in discovering and utilizing the expressions of our faith in relation to our neighbours needs and gifts. I believe that our local and global neighbours are ready for our changes and transitions.  I also believe that God has been inviting us to be open to the possibilities of being the church the Union of the four denominations envisioned — becoming a church that welcomes the burdened, healing the wounds of one another, and proclaiming the Words of Jesus, that all are welcome in God’s community.
